"Eggs, Reflected"

Connie Kleinjans fine art8x8, oil on canvas board

I've been wanting to paint this silver egg for awhile. It's one of those eggs that, when you shake it, you hear chimes. But I never found quite the right thing to paint next to it. Then these brown eggs came along. I did learn something: Metallic colors reflect what's around them (duh), so it's hard to use them to gain value differences. Or is it? I see a lot of black at the top of the egg. Hmm. I might have to try this again on a lighter background. But dark as it is, it still isn't as rich as the original. Darn these cameras!

I wish you all the best in 2009!

I bet that metallic egg was a real challenge. You did a great job.

  2. Hi Connie,

I realized I hadn't been to check out your blog until I read your comment on Dori's blog. And I've missed a lot!

First of all, I love the Garlic painting with the bold edges you did earlier! I love that style, it's so graphic, confident and shows passion!

The color combo. in your bok choy's is lovely. These egg paintings are really terrific! The red peeking through the edges is very exciting. Your brushwork is economical and reminds me of Carol Marine. Very nice work!

I must add you to my list of blogs I follow.

  3. Connie you really had fun with this. I like the relationship of the real eggs to the metalic. You have a wonderful way of laying out objects. Nice composition and brushwork.
Hope to see your abstracts soon.

  4. Hi Kim. Thanks for your kind comments and for visiting again. (Sorry it took so long to publish the note. D'oh!) I know I've dropped by your blog and admired your painterliness. Thanks, especially, for the comparison to Carol Marine, whose work I admire a lot. I got to take a workshop with her in late 2007.

My most recent post talks about how hard it is to do some paintings, and I have to say, it's the fun ones like this that I wish I could do more of. There's an energy you carry in your body when you do some work, and the paintings that fight seem to tighten me up. Argh.

Anyway, you're on my list of links. :)

  5. Hi Dori. Yes, sometimes figuring out the composition and relationship of objects is a fun puzzle. I really enjoyed the backwards 7 composition on this one, too.

I've posted my first abstract! I need a better camera...
